چکیده

Background Genetic mutations affecting β-amyloid (Αβ) production suggest that decreasing Αβ levels in healthy adults could prevent AD. However, evidence for behavioral interventions decrease is lacking. The current study examined whether heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback affects plasma levels. This intervention involves breathing slowly at a pace maximizes the amplitude of oscillations. During slow paced breathing, vagus nerve receives strong signals from stretch receptors blood vessels and lungs. These afferent stimulate ascending signaling activate ‘safety’ pathways, suppressing stress arousal pathways brain body. Experiencing adversity increases Aβ risk We hypothesized that, adults, daily sessions involving during HRV by these adversity-related processes. Method Healthy (N = 54 age 18-35; N 55-80) practiced five weeks. They were randomized to use increase oscillations (Osc+ condition) or personalized strategies try (Osc- condition). Heart rate variability is associated with amygdala functional connectivity with MPFC across younger and older adults

The ability to regulate emotion is crucial to promote well-being. Evidence suggests that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and adjacent anterior cingulate (ACC) modulate amygdala activity during emotion regulation. Yet less is known about whether the amygdala-mPFC circuit is linked with regulation of the autonomic nervous system and whether the relationship differs across the adult lifespan. ...

Physical Activity, Mindfulness Meditation, or Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback for Stress Reduction: A Randomized Controlled Trial

In contemporary western societies stress is highly prevalent, therefore the need for stress-reducing methods is great. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of self-help physical activity (PA), mindfulness meditation (MM), and heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) in reducing stress and its related symptoms. We randomly allocated 126 participants to PA, MM, or HRV-BF upon...

Motor Learning and Movement Performance: Older versus Younger Adults

Introduction: Motor skills play an important role during life span, and older adults need to learn or relearn these skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate how aging affects induction of improved movement performance by motor training. Methods: Serial Reaction Time Test (SRTT) was used to assess movement performance during 8 blocks of motor training. Participants were tested i...

First-Encounter Talks between Younger and Older Adults in Taiwan: A Conversation Analysis Approach

Outside of Western contexts, natural-conversation-based research on intergenerational communication is relatively rare. To help redress this imbalance, this paper explores the conversational styles of first-encounter talks between five pairs of college students and older adults in Taiwan, and infers the interactional norms that underlie them. It is found that younger Taiwanese adults tend to ex...

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback for Major Depression

Heart rate variability for the treatment of major depression is a novel, alternative approach that can offer symptom reduction with minimal-to-no noxious side effects. The following material will illustrate some of the work being conducted at our laboratory to demonstrate the efficacy of heart rate variability. Namely, results will be presented regarding our published work on an initial open-la...
